Information on Simple Roleplays and Improvs

What is the purpose of this section? Roleplays and Improvs are meant to allow users to create characters and, together, tell an interactive story. Sounds pretty simple, right? You control your characters. Other users control theirs. You can’t dictate another character’s actions – only your own character(s). You write your part of the story, and the other users write their part of the story.

What is an improv? Improvisations are a good way to get the benefit of a roleplay without all the work. These are very relaxed and basic threads. In an improv, you use script format to denote your character’s dialogue, and asterisks (*) to denote character actions. For example:

 Billy Joe: Sorry, Jimmy. Momma’s not here. I can help you with whatever you need though. *points to shelf* Look what we just got in stock!

What is a roleplay? Roleplays are like Improvs, but a little more involved. Instead of using script format and asterisks, you type out the character’s actions using quotations and English prose, like in a novel. The same sentence above would be typed this way in a Simple Roleplay.

“Sorry, Jimmy,” Billy Joe replied, “Momma’s not here. I can help you with whatever you need, though.”

Billy Joe pointed at one of the many shelves in the store. “Look what we just got in stock!” he exclaimed.

So, the only difference is using quotations versus script format? Not exactly. Improvs are going to be very off the top of your head sort of topics, with a loose story. Roleplays tend to have more thought out stories. These are just loose rules. Make or join whatever thread you are comfortable with.

How do I get involved? You can create a new improv or roleplay. Alternatively, you can join an existing improv or roleplay. The creator of a roleplay or improv topic is sometimes called a DM. They are free to set their own rules and gameplay within each topic. Some typical rules are “No Godmoding” (no overpowered characters) and “no killing someone’s character without their permission”. If a DM sets a rule that a roleplayer breaks, the DM may kick a user out of the roleplay.

What’s the difference between a Simple Roleplay and a Casual or Advanced Roleplay? You will notice that on the index of the forum, there are multiple sections for different levels of roleplay. Simple RPs tend to be one or two lines at most. The other sections have more rules, such as longer post requirements. For more information, see the guideline threads in those sections.

Is that it? Yep. Be sure to read the original post of any topic you are joining. Usually, the DM will explain the rules, and give you a template for a character request. The DM may choose to allow any characters into the RP, or may specify that they need to approve characters entering the roleplay.

There's also restrictions on quality of grammar and vocabulary right? Fancier RPs usually crank those up to simulate a more novel-like experience

Yes, on the Casual and Advanced roleplay sections, we will enforce this for all RPs. For Simple role plays, it is as the digression of the DM.

Simple RPs, no standard.

The other sections will have some standard requirements, such as word counts and the like.
