Take Over, The Break's Over: Announcing DCC 2.0

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Allow me to introduce myself, for those of you who do not know me. I am Gramps, otherwise known as K2D2. I've been around for awhile, and as of yesterday, I am the new owner and lead admin of this board. You can think of me as a man behind the curtain, ensuring the site is a rad place to visit, and that nothing's on fire. Liam, the former owner of the site, will likely make his own announcement explaining the change soon, but I think I can speak for the entire staff team when I say we thank him for his service in keeping the board online and maintained.

Moving forward, there are going to be some major changes happening to the board. You could consider the changes part of our initiative to create DCC 2.0. You may have already noticed a few of these changes. For a complete changelog of what's already changed, please see the bottom of this post. Here are the upcoming changes I can announce:

New Focus: In the past, Digital Community Cafe has been a place to maintain very casual, light conversation. We plan to change this. Moving forward, we want DCC to be the premier location on the internet for you to geek out about your favorite topics. Rather you're @Liberty geeking out about K-Pop, or @IntegrationNation geeking out about mathematical functions, we've got your back. The conversations are about to get longer. The connections are about to get deeper. It's time to unleash your fandom.

New Look: I will be working with the staff to completely re-engineer the site's design to reflect recent changes and our new direction. You will notice that a new theme is already available in the theme switcher which you can access from the very bottom of the site.

New Friends (and old ones): Let's face it. DCC has been in a bit of a holding pattern lately. That aside, I am sure most of us feel the same: We have all made really good friends on this board. It is time to bring everyone back together, catch back up about the old days, and reflect on the future. However; it's also the perfect time to make new friends. We will begin a loyalty program that rewards existing users for recruiting new members to the board. More on that later.

New Freedom: This should come as no surprise to any of you who know me, but one of my top priorities for DCC moving forward is to create an accepting environment for everyone. The previous shadow-ban on LGBT topics is lifted, effective immediately. A full non-discrimination policy will be released soon.

Here's What's Not Changing:

I may not have been part of CPI, but I respect the journey this board has gone through. Many of you have grown up together. We will always respect and value the users of this board, and the rich history they share.

Here's What's Already Changed:

Since taking power yesterday, I have completed the following tasks:

- Updated our security settings.

- Reviewed all ongoing bans. I have lifted the ban on the majority of users who were banned. The accounts that remain banned were spam accounts.

- Anonymous Login mode, a popular feature on the site that was taken away in 2016, has been restored.

- Re-named Dark Theme to "Atlanta", and updated it with several changes. Maintenance on this theme is still ongoing.

- Made available to users a second dark theme, "Chemical Cupcake".

- Re-enabled registrations, which have been broken since March.

- Added a link to the Members Directory at the top of the forum for easier access.

- Started work on the default theme, which will eventually be completely replaced.

Thank you all for your support. I look forward to making DCC a cool place to hangout. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any ideas on how I or the rest of the staff can continue moving forward and improving the site. I'd like to wish a merry Christmas to all who celebrate, and a joyous new year to all.

Warm Regards,

Gramps

That's embarassing, but later is always better than never, I suppose.

Also, why have various subfora been purged of?

It's part of your reforms, right?

I am aware that Cupcake has a few issues. Atlanta probably does too. I went ahead and made them available so you guys can help me beta them. I will be working on these themes throughout the day.

Yes, I know that's quite embarrassing that registrations have been down so long. We apologize profusely for the mistake.

You will notice sweeping reforms have already occurred to the Academics section, and lots of old topics with little activity have been purged. We are in the process of reforming Academics to use subforums inside of the forums. Please pardon our mess. As far as the purging of old topics go -- most of these topics generated no discussion, and were over a year old. If there is a topic you would like restored, feel free to PM me and I will do so. In the future I will probably make the archive a read-only area available to all.

Ah, well, everything needs honing and refining.

I think it would be in the interests of us all and for transparency to let the archive be available soon. Several of the discussions held there were rather captivating, but I can't remember a specific one now.

As I've said before, dire times necessitate dire changes. Let's hope these reforms act as a prodigious catalyst to revitalize a once-prosperous forum.

Sure, I can agree with that. I've fixed the issue you brought up on Cupcake. If you have more ideas on changes to make on the themes, feel free to let me know.

GRAMPS! Haven't heard from you for a while! How have you been?

I love this! I was thinking about a reunion sort of thing, I'm glad you've gone one step further and did this!

I'm good, but you probably figured that out since we're chatting on Discord right now. ;)

A place for 3 beings to discuss anything pertinent to mathematics, from the foundations to the abstractions.

There's a captivating description.

Alternatively you can use a bolded R to denote the real coordinate space, i.e R3.

What do you think about that, @Gramps?
